Ottessa Moshfegh is a New York Times–bestselling and award winning author known for her satirical prose and unreliable narrators. Her newest book, Death in Her Hands, is centered around an elderly widow who finds herself in the center of an unfolding mystery—or so she thinks.
As a designer at Penguin Random House, I worked with the marketing team at Penguin Press to create materials for a promotional mailing. Leaning into the murder-mystery theme and gothic feel of the book, we created a “make your own murder-mystery kit” akin to Clue or roleplaying games. We provided a note—a replica of the one the protagonist discovers on the first page—as well as a map of the land, and designs of the main suspects.
